Instructor: Jo Garvin Participants will
be making a Friendship Star quilt, a design which became popular around
1840. The first class will cover measuring, cutting and sewing. The second
class will cover how to put the quilt together with batting, backing,

History is People! Heritage Music Program Interpreter/Musician: Rich Pawling Experience the heritage of Lancaster County in a unique blend of story and song. Presented by nationally recognized cultural interpreter/musician, Rich Pawling, of History Alive!, this dynamic program weaves introductions about the history and culture of the people of Lancaster County with the music of the past. Themes include wagon transportation, the iron industry, canals and railroads, the agrarian and religious significance of the county, and even the importance of baseball! Programs begin at 6:30 p.m. on Penn Square, just outside of the Heritage Center Museum, or in the event of rain, in the lobby of the Quilt & Textile Museum. Instructor: Jo Griffith Learn quick and easy Trapunto by Machine to achieve the look of traditional stuffed work! You will make an elegant pillow top utilizing techniques which will carry over into many areas of quilting, home decoration, and wearables. Mayan Backstrap Weaving Instructor: Susan Weaver This class will be a very simplified version of the weaving technique of the Mayans of Mexico and Guatemala, which eventually evolved into the vertical loom used by the Pueblos and Navajos of our southwest. There will be samples of authentic Mayan looms and cloth, as well as an overview of their traditional textile history. The kit will include a loom for students to take home and continue weaving. History Camp -- Rebels, Redcoats and Rrevolution: Grades 4-6 This camp provides an opportunity for students to explore the American Revolution and 18th-century Lancaster. Students will visit national recognized historic sites and museums, and create related projects to take home.

Instructor: Kim Hondares Celebrate Christmas in July while creating whimsical Santas using raw wool. This class is best for those who have taken needlefelting classes previously or are confident in their skills. Level of difficulty: Intermediate to advanced. Registration deadline: June 27, 2008.
Making hooked rugs
with a punch needle and yarn dates back to the 1880s. Today it is described
as "painting with wool" and offers endless creative opportunities
for using texture, color, and pattern. In this class, folk-art designs
and beautiful 100% wool yarns will be combined to create a quick and easy
8" piece that may be used as a trivet, wall hanging, or tabletop
decoration. By the end of the day, students will have learned all the
skills needed to go on to make larger rugs. No previous experience is
necessary. Kit includes punch needle, frame, wool yarn, rug backing, and

History Camp -- Johnny Reb and Billy Yank, the Civil War in Pennsylvania: Grades 7-8 This camp offers a week's worth of activities, visits and study opportunities related to the Civil War experience for Pennsylvanians. Students will visit national recognized historic sites and museums, and create related projects to take home.

Instructor: Kim Hondares Kim Hondares will
guide you through the techniques of needlefelting while holiday pumpkins
made from raw wool take shape before your eyes. Students will take home
a finished project. Level of difficulty: Intermediate. Registration deadline:
August 29, 2008.
Instructor: Patty Harants – www.pattyharantsapplique.com Students will
have a choice of 2 patterns, based on traditional Fraktur decorations,
to create an appliqué block. Patty will be teaching the backbasting
technique, which allows a block to be completed in 2 steps without the
use of freezer paper or Mylar templates. Patty Harants is an international
teacher that specializes in historical quilt replication and appliqué
and is also a noted fabric designer for Windham Fabrics. A kit will be
furnished with a muslin background and replicated historical fabrics and
embroidery needles and threads. There will be lots of show and tell of
replicated historical quilts. Registration deadline: September 19, 2008.
